Document Summary

AT&T Compatibility Bulletin No. 149 (CB-149) is the most complete single source for the TBOS protocol specification. It also describes TABS, another legacy protocol for telephone equipment monitoring. Its official title is "Maintenance Standards for Digital Transmission Systems". Issue 4 dated November 1, 1989 is the last version known to us.

CB-149 section B2 describes the TBOS protocol. Section C2 briefly describes a TBOS application in terms of various alarm remotes. Minor differences relating to actions upon error detection exist between CB-149 and PUBs 49001/43804, which also describe the TBOS protocol.  CB-149 was formerly obtainable from:

However, the document has apparently been canceled and can no longer be ordered.  TSA is currently negotiating with Lucent and with BellCore to obtain permission to publish the TBOS-relevant portions of CB-149 (and other out of print PUBs) on TBOS.net.
