Document Summary

Although AT&T Compatibility Bulletin No. 149 (CB-149) is the most complete single source for the TBOS protocol specification, Bell System Technical Reference PUBs 43804 and 49001 describe the TBOS protocol as well.

PUB 43804 is officially titled "Network Terminal Equipment Operations Interface Specification". Paragraphs 3.54 through 3.59 describe the TBOS protocol from the point of view of monitored equipment connected to an E2A APR. Minor differences relating to actions upon error detection exist between PUBs 43804/49001 (which are virtually identical word-for-word) and CB-149. The latter also defines latch and unlatch serial commands, which are not discussed in either PUB.

The last version of PUB 43804 known to us is dated October, 1983. This PUB was obsoleted several years ago and is unavailable from BellCore. It may have been replaced by GR-474 although TBOS is not mentioned in the summary for that document and is not discovered by a database search of the BellCore site.
